This will be no ordinary Thanksgiving. There will be no undercooked turkey, no Aunties asking you “when you gonna get a man”, no schlepping to the movie theater after dinner, and more important, no dishes to wash!
We are headed to South Africa for 8 days of exploration, fun, food, and wonderful times with the Wandering Moms and their families!
Dates: November 23 – December 1st
Locations: Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa
Let’s get into this itinerary!
Saturday, November 23rd:
WAMKELEKILE!!! (That’s Welcome in Xhosa) It’s welcome day! When you arrive, we’ll get you checked into our hotel. If you arrive early, you’ll have some time to explore on your own.
In the evening, we’ll get together for a Welcome Dinner to sample some local flavors, fill our bellies, and get to know one another!
Sunday, November 24th:
I know it’s Sunday but we can still get our learn on. We’ll grab the kids and visit the Apartheid Museum which is recognized as the pre-eminent museum sharing the story of Apartheid and the history of South Africa.
Each person is given a ticket telling them if they are “white” or “colored” and they are only allowed to enter the museum based on their categorization.
The Apartheid Museum is impactful, informational, and sobering.
Monday, November 25th
We’ll take a visit to Soweto, the largest township in South Africa. Townships are neighborhoods designed to separate blacks and colored people from the areas where whites lived and to keep them contained.
Soweto has grown to become a city in and of itself with areas that are reminiscent of its sobering past as well as areas that boast the uprising of its people.
Soweto was home to Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Trevor Noah’s family. We’ll spend half a day walking through Soweto, learning about its history and we’ll visit a school.
On this evening, we’ll transfer to Cape Town. We will land in Cape Town pretty late, just enough time to catch some zzz’s.
Tuesday, November 26th
In the morning, we’ll be scooped up to head out to our Game Lodge for safari. YES, WE SAID SAFARI!!!
Once we arrive at our game lodge, we’ll be welcomed with a refreshing drink and a buffet lunch before we get checked in.
Anybody ready to see some animals!!! After we’re fed and refreshed, we’ll head for a game drive to see how many kinds of animals we can spot — elephants, buffalo, giraffes, gazelles, gnus, hyenas…and even lions!!
Meals will be served at the game reserve lodge buffet style. The lodge also features an infinity pool, a spa, a cigar lounge and a play area for the kiddos!
Wednesday November 27th
We’ll get up eeeeeaaarrly in the morning to head out on one last game drive to catch a glimpse of any animals we may have missed.
After our last game drive, we’ll grab breakfast then check out and head back to Cape Town. Once we arrive in Cape Town, we’ll take some time to explore the area around our hotel and hang out at the beach.
Just be advised, the beaches are beautiful, the weather is amazing, but the water is cold. Kids don’t seem to care and we can still lay out and soak up some sun and rest.
Thursday November 28th
Happy Thanksgiving from Cape Town!!! While our friends and family are starting off their Thanksgiving morning with dinner prep, we’ll be getting out and exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
We’ll have breakfast at the hotel, and then jump on the Hop On/Hop Off Bus to see the city. I’ll be honest, I tend to think that HOHO buses are boring…BUT NOT IN CAPE TOWN. There is just so much to see and the city is just so beautiful that it makes for a great HOHO experience.
We’ll get off on a few stops along the way, including Table Mountain, of course.
Table Mountain is considered one of the 7 natural wonders of the world…you’ll see why when you’re looking out over the city and the ocean from atop it. It is a wonder to behold!
After we enjoy our time viewing the city, we’ll hop a ferry to Robben Island, the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for a number of years. If there’s anything that should help us count our blessings it’s the reality that a man was imprisoned for decades simply for wanting to be treated as equal to other humans.
Your children will learn about this in school, but no book, picture or video will come close to the experience of being there.
Thanksgiving Dinner will be QUITE special. We’ll be dining at a restaurant that’s much more than dining. It’s truly an experience!
We’ll be presented with 15 courses of tasting plates from all over the continent of Africa. If there’s a dish you want more of simply ask and it will appear.
Not only is the food something special, but the entertainment is as well. We’ll get to see drummers, singers and dancers in action AND be encouraged to join in the fun. Best of all, there’s no clean-up after dinner!
Friday, November 29th
Black Friday?? No tredging through malls and standing on line to buy yet another television for us…no, we’ll be heading out to the beautiful and colorful neighborhood of Bo-Kaap to learn about it’s history and to get the story behind the colors in the neighborhood….and to get some photos!
We’ll have a photographer on hand to snap a couple of photos of you and your little one to commemorate your Thanksgiving holiday.
After we leave Bo-Kaap, we’ll head to Sea Point Pools where the kids can swim in any one of the many pools with a backdrop of the beach while parents can relax and read a book or hop in the pools along with them.
Once we’re all done with swimming, we can hop on bikes and ride along the water front to enjoy the view or stop at the playgrounds along the way.
Saturday, November 30th
We’ll start our day off with a visit to Acrobranch! It’s a tree top play jungle with courses and fun for all ages, yep, even for us moms!
One of the MANY things you just HAVE to do when in South Africa, is visit a vineyard and have a wine tasting. We can’t let you miss out on South African wine just because the kids are with us…plus, we aren’t driving!
Once we’ve worn ourselves out climbing trees and walking tight ropes, we’ll move to Cape Point Vineyards for a picnic and wine tasting with views of the ocean and mountains as our backdrop.
After lunch, we continue down the peninsula to the Cape of Good Hope which was historically believed to be the southern most point of Africa…turns out its the south-western most point, but still cool, lol.
THEN WE’LL GO SEE THE PENGUINS!!
Did you know there were penguins in Africa!?!?! YEP! Most of us think penguins and we think snow…and when we think snow, we DEFINITELY DO NOT think Africa!
Sunday, December 1st
Hamba kahle! (goodbye in Zulu) It’s time to depart….I’ll warn you now, you will fall in love with Cape Town and you will want to come back and do the things you didn’t get to do because there is SO MUCH to do and see in this city.
Lucky for you, Cape Town isn’t going anywhere 🙂
