This will be no ordinary Thanksgiving! There will be no undercooked turkey, no aunties asking you “when you gonna get a man”, no schlepping to the movie theater after dinner, and more important, no dishes to wash!
We are headed to South Africa for 9 days of exploration, fun, food, and wonderful times with the Wandering Moms and their families!
Nov 20th – Nov 28th, 2021
Location: Johannesburg and Cape Town, South Africa
WAMKELEKILE!!! (That’s Welcome in Xhosa) It’s welcome day! When you arrive, we’ll get you checked into our hotel. If you arrive early, you’ll have some time to explore on your own.
In the evening, we’ll get together for a Welcome Dinner to get to know one another and sample some local flavors, fill our bellies, and get to know one another!
I know it’s Sunday but we can still get our learn on. We’ll grab the kids and visit the Aparthied Musuem which is recognized as the pre-eminent museum sharing the story of Apartheid and the history of South Africa.
Each person is given a ticket telling them if they are “white” or “coloroed” and they are only allowed to enter the museum based on their categorization.
The Apartheid Museum is impactful, informational, and sobering.
After our museum visit, we will grab lunch and visit some South African markets for some SHOPPING!
We’ll take a visit to Soweto, the largest township in South Africa. Townships are neighborhoods designed to separate blacks and colored people from the areas where whites lived and to keep them contained.
Soweto has grown to become a city in and of itself with areas that are reminiscent of its sobering past as well as areas that boast the uprising of its people.
Soweto was home to Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Trevor Noah’s family. We’ll spend half a day walking rhough Soweto, learning about its history.
We will also get the opportunity to volunteer at a school in Soweto that was built to house and educate orphaned children.
In hte morning, we’ll be scooped up to head out to our Game Lodge for safari.
YES WE SAID SAFARI!!!!
Once we arrive at our game lodge, we’ll be welcomed with a refreshing drink and a buffet lunch before we get checked in.
Anybody ready to see some animals!! After we’re fed and refreshed, we’ll head for a game drive to see how many kinds of animals we can spot – elephants, buffalo, giraffes, gazelles, gnus, hyenas…and even lions!
Meals will be served at the game reserve lodge buffet style. The lodge also features an infinity pool, a spa, a cigar lounge and a play area for the kiddos!
We’ll get up eeeeaaarrrlly in the morning to head out on one last game drive to catch a glimpse of any animals we may have missed.
If you have the chance, you can even get up early to schedule a spa service. Yes honey, there is a spa at the game reserve. Below are ACTUAL pictures of the spa ya’ll. It’s INSANE!
After our last game drive or spa visits, we’ll grab breakfast, then check out and head back to Cape Town. Once we arrive in Cape Town, we’ll check into our hotel and head out for a swim at the Sea Point pools and a bike ride along the waterfront. Definitely a great way to be properly introduced to Cape Town!
Happy Thanksgiving from Cape Town!!
While our friends and faimly are starting off their Thanksgiving morning with dinner prep, we’ll be getting out and exploring one of the most beautiful cities in the world!
We’ll have breakfast at the hotel and then jump on a Hop On/Hop Off Bus to see the city. To be perfectly honest, we typically think HOHO buses are a snooze fest but NOT IN CAPE TOWN!! Ther is just so much to see and the city is just so beautiful that it makes for a great HOHO experience.
We’ll get off on a few stops along the way, including Table Mountain, of course.
Thanksgiving Dinner will be QUITE special. We’ll be dining at a restaurant that’s much more than dining. It’s truly an experience! we’ll be presented with 15 coruses of tasting plates from all over the continent of Africa. If there’s a dish you want more of, simply ask and it will appear!
The food is one thing, but the entertainment is QUITE another. We don’t want to spoil it for you but this part is always one of our favorite memories!
Black Friday?? No tredging through malls and standing in line to buy yet antoher television for us…no! We’re heading out for a FULL day of fun!
Starting with….TREE CLIMBING ANYONE!?!?!
WE’ll start our day off with a visit to Acrobranch.
It’s a treetop play jungle with several levels of courses and fun for all ages. Yep, even for us moms and dads!
One of the MANY things you just HAVE to do when in South Africa is visit a vineyard and have a wine tasting. We can’t let you miss out on South African wine just because the kids are with us. Plus, we aren’t driving!
Once we’ve worn ourselves out climbing trees and walking tight ropes, we’ll move to Cape Point Vineyards for a picnic and wine tsating with views of the ocean and mountains as our backdrop and spoiler alert, this vineyard has a playground so the kids can do their thing while us adults do ours!
Then we’ll go see the PENGUINS!!
Did you know there were penguins in Africa!?!?!
YEP THERE SURE ARE.
Most of us think penguins and we think show…and when we think show, we DEFINITELY do not think of Africa.
But there they are…snowless penguins in Africa!
Our last full day in South Africa, we’ll be heading out to the beautiful and colorful neighborhood of Bo-Kaap to get some photos! We’ll have a photographer on hand to snap a couple of photos of you and your little one to commemorate your Thanksgiving holiday.
Hmaba kahle! (goodbye in Zulu). It’s time to depart. We’ll warn you now, you will fall in love with Cape Town and you will want to come back and do the things you didn’t get to do because there is SO MUCH to do and see in this city.
Lucky for you, Cape Town isn’t going anwywhere!
