Thanksgiving in 2020 may as well be EPIC! You’ve already done the traditional Thanksgiving with the family coming over, stressing out over Thanksgiving dinner, and then having to clean your house when everyone leaves. It’s a new decade, why not celebrate Thanksgiving in an entirely new way in a new country, with new friends you’re sure to call family by the end of your trip!
Dates: Nov 21st – 29th
Location: Nairobi, Masai Mara, and Mombasa, Kenya
Saturday, Nov 21st
Hello and welcome to Kenya!
When you arrive, we’ll get you checked into our hotel. If you arrive early, you’ll have some time to explore on your own.
We will start our first evening with a few activities to get to know one another or reconnect with one another. We’ll also enjoy a special welcome dinner!
Sunday, Nov 22nd
Ever gotten up close and personal with a giraffe?
On this day we’ll stop by the Giraffe center. If you’re looking for something truly special, something worth both “likes” and “lols”, place a pellet between your lips and wait. See what happens. Spoiler: giraffe kiss. A giraffe will slobber all over your face when taking the pellet! How sweet, lol
Afterwards, we’ll head over to the Elephant Orphanage. You can adopt one if you like! But you can’t actually take it home.
Monday, Nov 23rd – Tuesday, Nov 24th
Are you ready for the MOST incredible safari you have ever witnessed?
We will travel to Massai Mara, famous for their incredible safaris. You will see these animals in their natural habitat doing exactly what comes natural to them. So as Scar said “be prepared”.
We’ll do multiple game drives while we are there to give you the opportunity to spot the “Big Five”. Can you name them all?
The Big Five consists of – Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Leopard, Elephant, and Buffalo and they all live in the Mara along with Zebras, Gazelles, Giraffes, Wildabeasts, and so many more animals. It may actually feel like we’re in the Lion King…except they won’t break out into song and dance. Sorry about that.
We’ll also pay a visit to a local Masai village and get to know how the Masai people live.
First things first, we’ll participate in a traditional jumping ceremony! Got ups?
It is traditional for Masai men to conduct jumping ceremonies to celebrate the right of passage of Masai boys into Masai men.
Wednesday, Nov 25th
We’ll head to the coast of East Africa to enjoy some beach time and to hang out with some more animals that are a little bit friendlier than the ones we saw on safari – DOLPHINS!
Grab the kids, the goggles, and the life jackets as we’ll get the opportunity to snorkel and then swim with dolphins!
Thursday, Nov 26th
It’s Thanksgiving Day! We have so many things to be grateful for. This day, we will be reminded of this as the group will visit Fort Jesus, a site where captured Africans were taken to be washed and stored before leaving the door of no return to be shipped throughout the world as slaves.
This history is sobering and emotional. We will pay homage to the ancestors who were taken from their home land and rejoice in their resilience and perserverance. It’s because of that reslience that we are here today.
That evening we will gather to share Thanksgiving dinner as a family.
Friday, Nov 26th – Sunday, Nov 28th
Time to head back to Nairobi! You’ll get a free day on Friday in Nairobi!
On Saturday, we’ll spend some time giving back to the wonderful people of Nairobi by volunteering in the city.
That evening, we will have our farewell dinner to toast an amazing time together.
Sunday is depaarture day! It will be so hard to say goodbye, but we must. We’ll definitely be giving out big hugs before we leave!
