Disney World- Orlando, Florida
One of the most family-friendly Halloween destinations in the US is Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. Disney World goes all out with the most gorgeous Halloween decorations you could ever dream of when they dress up the parks for their Disney After Hours Boo Bash. The Boo Bash is a three hour ticketed even that occurs on select nights from August through October. Not only will you experience the amazing Disney Halloween decorations, but there is trick-or-treating throughout the park, a spectacular Halloween parade, and lots of Halloween themed treats and goodies!
With it’s dark and spooky history, Salem is one of the top haunted Halloween destinations for families in the USA! The Salem Witch Trials date back to 1692 and included hundreds of accusations of witchcraft, 30 convictions and 19 executions. While we now see this historic event in a much different light, the town of Salem has embraced it’s haunted history and celebrates it’s past every October. You can visit the Salem Witch Museum and the Salem Witch Village year round, but they’re especially fun to visit around Halloween. In October, you’ll also find re-enactments of the infamous Salem Witch trials, guided tours of haunted locations, seances, parades, and magic shows. The whole town goes all out with Halloween decorations and events, plus you can visit filming locations from the movie Hocus Pocus right in town!
Estes Park, Colorado

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado was the inspiration for Stephen King’s classic “The Shining” and is still known as one of the most haunted hotels in the entire USA! The hotel hosts the annual Shining Ball, which is an an adult themed costume party with rather expensive tickets- but you can visit the hotel on your own as well to get a feel for it’s spookiness. Estes Park hosts a Spooky Village, a Halloween parade and trick-or-treat event for children and families, so if younger ones are a bit intimidated by the famous haunted hotel, there’s still plenty of ways to enjoy Halloween in Estes Park!
Savanna, Georgia is known for being the most haunted city in the United States! You can take a guided ghost tour that will show you all of Savannah’s ghostly haunts- there are walking tours as well as tours that travel by haunted carriage. There are even haunted pub tours for the grown ups! Savannah is also known for it’s hauntingly beautiful cemeteries which also offer tours. The Bonaventure Cemetery Tour is one of the most popular- especially around Halloween! And if you’re looking to stay in a haunted hotel during your trip, the Marshall House is said to be the most haunted hotel in all of Savannah!
Every year, Henry Ford’s Greenfield Village dresses up for Halloween with it’s “Hallowe’en in Greenfield Village” event. Located just outside of Detroit, the beautiful historic village gets decked out with thousands of jack-o-lanterns, costumed actors, and spooky Halloween displays. Guest follow a walking trail through the festivities, stopping to trick-or-treat at various stations along the way. The Halloween Express is a historic steam engine that offers rides throughout the village as well. This event is very family friendly, with nothing too scary for young ones but enough to keep older kids and even teens entertained! Dining experiences include the Hallowe’en Fairy Tale Feast in the Taste of History Restaurant and Harvest Supper at the Eagle Tavern. If you’re looking to splurge on amazing food- a holiday meal at the Eagle Tavern is the perfect treat!
Sleepy Hollow, New York
Sleepy Hollow, New York is a small town about an hour north of New York City and it’s home to the legend of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman- so of course it makes for a perfect haunted Halloween destination for families! Halloween is a month long celebration in Sleepy Hollow, so you can plan a visit any time throughout the month of October. Visit Phillipsburg Manor, the Lyndhurst Mansion and Cortland Manor for a variety of haunted Halloween activities all month long. If you’re into cemeteries, Sleepy Hollow is home to one of the oldest in the country- the Old Dutch Burying Ground. The town also sponsors numerous Halloween themed street fairs and parades during the month of October so there’s plenty of fun for the whole family.!
New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans often battles Savannah, Georgia for the title of the most haunted city in the USA! New Orleans is home to some of the best haunted houses and paranormal tours in the country, then add in the Halloween parade plus the street parties and you’ve got a perfectly haunted Halloween destination! Be sure to tour one of New Orleans’ famous cemeteries and check out the spooky activities at the Voodoo Music and Art Experience as well!
Historic Williamsburg, Virginia is a fantastic family-friendly destination all year long- but it’s particularly amazing around Halloween. There are lots of Halloween themed events that are fun for the whole family here. Haunted Williamsburg offers guided ghost tours of the historic buildings- plus a “Ghost Walk Junior” for younger family members. Monsters, Mayhem and Musik is a spooky musical concert featuring 17th and 18th century baroque music. The Haunting on DoG street features a spooky ghost tour with skeleton horses and costumed riders where you can take a carriage ride and trick-or-treat in the streets. Family Fright Nights at the Jamestown Settlement offer haunted houses, trick-or-treating, ghostly tales and games like pumpkin bowling. Universal Studios is a spooktacular Halloween destination for families with older children and teens. Halloween Horror Nights is a combination of Halloween mazes, scare zones, and thrilling roller-coasters and rides. The mazes and scare zones are movie-set quality haunted houses, each based on a different Halloween theme.
